Strong Slalom Showing at Crested Butte For Western

Crested Butte, Colo. – After snagging a 4th place on Saturday (1:27.07), sophomore Kyra Long captured her first collegiate victory in the slalom on Sunday at Crested Butte Mountain Resort with a time of 1:26.32. Sophomore Abby Davidson ended the weekend with a 6th place both Saturday (1:29.85) and Sunday (1:31.72). Senior Carley Clegg finished 18th on Sunday (1:42.69), freshmen Maeve Poulson finished the weekend with two 20th places (1:43.75 Saturday and 1:43.30 on Sunday), and senior Carmen Smith placed 21st on Saturday (1:45.79) and 24th on Sunday (1:44.82) out of a field of 51 ladies.  As a team, the Mountaineer ladies skied a combined weekend time to capture the third place overall team title behind Denver University and the University of Colorado Boulder, respectively.

In the men’s race,  junior Tyler Long (brother of Kyra Long) skied his fastest collegiate performance with a total time of 1:15.83 on Saturday landing him in 5th place. Freshmen Trevor Buongiorno skied into 12th on Saturday (1:22.25) and 7th (1:25.07) on Sunday. Sophomore Beck Heidmous skied into 25th on Saturday (1:40.54) and 23rd (1:43.24) on Sunday squashing his goals of making top 30th this season! Currently, the Mountaineer men sit in 5th for the overall season behind UCOB, AFA, CMU and DU.

The last collegiate ski race Crested Butte hosted was the first weekend in February 2008, a decade ago. Mountaineer’s Head Alpine Coach, Ciera Freson raced in that very race and is thrilled to help keep the Western ski racing tradition alive.
