The Mountain Sports Trail Running Team headed to Colorado Springs the weekend of April 26th for their final race of this year’s season, the Cheyenne Mountain Trail Race. The race included a 10k, 25k, and 50k distance. After a long snowy winter with many athletes racing for the snow sports teams, the trail team was back to its larger size to represent Western Colorado University at Cheyenne Mountain.
The trail team showed the front rangers what a long winter does; builds grit and strong running. Junior, Jeshurun Small and Junior, Madison Hart both took the win for the 50k distance. Senior, Gordon Gianniny was close on Small’s heels, finishing in 2nd place. Freshman Ben Kusnetzky used the Cheyenne Mountain as a long run for his upcoming 100 mile race, The Bighorn Trail 100, which is only six short weeks away. In addition, Emma Nelson completed her first ever ultra-marathon and was smiling the whole time. In the 25k, Elle Walton finished 4th place female. For his final race with Mountain Sports, Senior Riley Moser made it on the podium with a 2nd place finish in the 10k distance. Junior Skylar Drakos was close behind, finishing top 10. Senior Kendall Cox finished 4th in the 10k during her last race with Mountain Sports. Kelsey Swanson also raced the 10k to wrap up her time at Western with the Trail Team.
The team ended the 2018/2019 season on a great note at the Cheyenne Mountain Trail Race. Camping the night before the race was a great way for the team to spend time together before the summer. With standout performances in the race, athletes showed what the structure of the team can do for trail running abilities. The positive attitudes these student athletes illuminated through the duration of the event showed how much they love to run on trails.
