The Western Nordic Team traveled to the Grand Mesa this past weekend to compete at the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Invitational.
In the 5km interval start classic race on Saturday, the team took first place in both the men’s and women’s team standings against the other Rocky Mountain Conference schools – Air Force, Colorado College, Colorado Mesa, and the University of Wyoming. The men were led by seniors Nate Maddox and Kevin Geisen in 2nd and 5th place respectively. Providing strong support for the team standings were freshman Luke Bodewes and juniors Derek Hill and Gordon Gianniny in 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively. Scoring 5 racers in the top 10 is a tremendous effort by this team, and proves the depth within the squad. The Western women’s team actually tied with Wyoming for the team title in Saturday’s classic race. The women were led by Rya Berrigan in 3rd, Anna Johnson in 5th, and Lexie Abric in 7th. All three freshman in the top 7 is incredible, and proves these ladies will be a force to be reckoned with this season, and into the future.
Sunday’s race proved to be even better for the Western Men. The team landed 6 skiers in the top 11 and won the team race handily, beating the University of Wyoming by 15 points. The team was once again led by seniors Nate Maddox and Kevin Geisen in 2nd and 4th place respectively. Close behind in 5th place, junior Gordon Gianniny posted his best race of the season so far. Many strong performances by the Western men, but freshman Tyler Haroldson raced very well and landed in 11th place to round out the top scorers for the team. Well done Ty! The women’s squad was led by freshman Rya Berrigan in 7th, and Lexie Abric in 9th. Well done ladies!
The Western Nordic team will be hosting this upcoming weekend’s races in Crested Butte, in conjunction with Crested Butte Nordic. Look for continued strength and improvement by the whole team. Go Western!
