The Western Mountain Sports Nordic Ski Team hosted the USCSA Rocky Mountain Conference this past weekend for two races, in conjunction with the NCAA West Region (RMISA) and the CB Nordic Alley Loop Ski Marathon. The races proved to be an important turning point in the season for the Western Team, with strong performances on both the men’s and women’s teams.
Saturday was the 21km skate race, in conjunction with the Alley Loop, and the Western women’s team led the charge with strong showings by freshmen Anna Johnson, Rya Berrigan, and Lexie Abric in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th place respectively, in the USCSA scoring. Rounding out the women’s team scoring was sophomore Eleanor Skinner. The ladies handily won the team scoring and proved they are a force to be reckoned with in the longer distance events.
For the Western men, Saturday allowed the team to showcase their prowess as well. Seniors Kevin Geisen and Nate Maddox led the charge in 2nd and 5th place respectively, within the USCSA schools. Behind them, juniors Gordon Gianniny and Derek Hill landed in 7th and 8th place respectively.
Sunday, in the 5km classic event, the Western women impressed with Anna Johnson in 1st, Rya Berrigan in 2nd, and Lexie Abric in 6th. Well done ladies! The team used these three scores to handily win the USCSA Team scoring. Not to be out done, the men landed 5 racers in the top 10, with Nate Maddox and Kevin Geisen once again leading the charge in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Freshman Luke Bodewes skied a strong race to land in 6th place on the day.
The junior and senior men on the team will head to Minturn, CO this weekend to race against the top USCSA skiers, the region’s NCAA teams, and Colorado’s top juniors in two 10km events. Here’s to more success by the Western Team! #GoWestern.
